Kites, Game of the Month – March 2023
“Let’s go fly a kite” sang that grumpy Dad from Mary Poppins. Well, I’m sometimes a grumpy Dad but generally I have a more chipper disposition. But I have been asking my boys if they want to fly Kites recently, as this month I purchased Kites: Time to Fly and it kept hitting the table… sixteen times to be precise!

Kites is a real-time co-operative game that takes less than 10 minutes to play. Players will take it in turn to play a card from their hand, this will flip one or two timers over. These timers run at different speeds and represent Kites you are trying to keep up in the air. If a timer runs out you lose. Manage to keep them soaring in the sky until all cards are played and you win!

The quick play time is certainly one of the reasons it has hit the table so often. You’ll quite regularly play a couple of games back-to-back. Especially if you lose! You’re certainly more likely to lose with new players and kids as they randomise the game and don’t pick up on how much communication can help secure victories. The challenge is also part of the fun!

My win rate is about 50/50 so there is enough of a challenge to keep it interesting and there is also extra cards you can add in to mix up the gameplay. Frantic and stressful are not two words that I normally like to associate with board games, but Kites delivers it in a quick, short dose that becomes slightly addictive rather than too much! For all these reasons, Kites: Time to Fly is my game of the month for March!
