Sniper Elite, Game of the Month – February 2023
Regular visitors of this website might remember a feature I wrote on games at the UK Games Expo 2022. One of the games I got very excited for at the expo was Sniper Elite. A board game implementation of the popular computer game. Chatting at the stand I got a feel for the game and thought that it sounded right up my street. It went straight onto my wish list at Out of Town Games and jumped in and out of my shopping basket like a child playing hopscotch.
That all changed at Christmas, when I overruled my eldest son’s own board game list and instead wrapped up Sniper Elite for him. We often play a two player game together and I knew this would be his jam. Fortunately on Christmas day he wasn’t disappointed. Fast forward through the busy month of January and I finally got it to the table in Feb. It was indeed both of our jams, and we spread it on the proverbial board game table toast for dinner on a few evenings.

The first play left us both dreaming about what we could’ve done differently, dissecting it over real toast the next morning. We were both musing about all the strategies we could deploy in our next match up. I still am thinking of tactical subterfuge that I can carry out in our forthcoming matchups!

In Sniper Elite, one of you plays as the solo Sniper, attempting to carry out two secret missions using hidden movement and a push your luck shooting mechanic. The other player is playing as the defenders who, are patrolling the base making sure there are no snipers in the midst. Spoiler alert: there is definitely a sniper running about! With surprisingly few things you can do on your turn, it plays rather swiftly. Sniper Elite offers a delectable tactical duel for two players and if it sounds like your jam, I urge you to spread it thickly on your board game table toast soon too!
