An abstract game is quite a semi-ambiguous phrase used in the board game community. Trust me there have been plenty of arguments and endless forums about this!
Suffice to say that in broad terms an abstract game often refers to a turn-based game without a theme, usually for two players, that doesn’t involve luck. Backgammon and Othello are perfect examples of an abstract game in its purest form.
