Hit the Silk! Game of the Month – July 2021
I have been buoyed at the end of July by the wonderful experience of the UK Games Expo. Over the three day event I played a bundle of games, new and old, known and unknown. I drunk more Guinness than I think I have done in the rest of my life put together. In short, Birmingham was truly brilliant.
The best bit though, was after a couple of years living with the pandemic, I got to see people. Amazing people at that. People I have met through a shared love of board games with the help of the Instagram board game community. Many of whom I was meeting for the first time. It was glorious, and just the dose of relaxing normality I needed.
I must commend UKGE for their sterling efforts to make the event feel safe and normal. Despite it being scaled back from previous years it was still a lovely experience and truly wonderful to be a part of.

My game of the month was a tough decision as I played a lot of different games, all very few times. So my game of the month for July 2021 is a Kickstarter I backed and picked up at the Expo: Hit the Silk! (you might remember me previewing it a while ago)
In Hit the Silk! you are a bunch of crooks who have just done the heist of their lives to pay back the mob. Unfortunately, the pilot has escaped and you are left on a plane falling out of the sky. Scrambling for enough money to pay the mob back and to find parachutes, low and behold one is missing and so the fun begins…

This game of bluffing, gambling, deceit and chance was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Its ease of teaching, immersive theme and six player count helped provide two evening’s worth of entertainment in the gaming halls of UKGE. In one game I was swindled out of 40k in a dodgy trade and left on the plane without a parachute, but managed to land the plane against the odds and escape with almost as much money as the filthy backstabbers!
Hit the Silk! is one of those games that you spend as much time dissecting and laughing about what occurred, as you do playing it. That social amusement that has been lacking during the pandemic shone through. It was great to be social again at UKGE and this game provided a lovely framework for that to occur. Be sure to check it out if you can!
Rumours are rife that we might have copy of Hit the Silk! to giveaway – keep your eyes peeled!
